I am flying to Helsinki and can spend 1 day in Munich in June ; I think I will hit McGraw and take photos in the AM , stop by the old Blue room for lunch, head downtown and goof around MarienPlatz then hit hit the Chinese tower at the Englisher gardens. I was thinking about making the trip to Andechs but thats a bit much.

What would you do ?

Status of McGraw Kasern

jkarp — Wed, 05/12/2010 - 11:42

I have returned to Europe to live and go to Munich often. Yes Von Steuben hall is gone. It was there in August 2005 but was being torn down in early 2006. Blue Room has been closed for maybe 15-20 years as the block was converted to Apartments and some ground floor retail. In 2006 I went into the old Elbow room which was across the street from the academic building/commissary. I sat and had a few beers. The places was exactly the same including the smell of stale beer and old brown wooden walls and tables. I went back in 2007 and it was closed as well. Prior commentators are correct about the campus being closed to access as it is part of Munich Police Department. Access to Perry hall and Dickson hall are available, but serve as local residences. Dickson looks exactly the same as during my time in 1969-1971.

Those of us who were there prior to 1971 recall Tegernselandstrasse running through the Kasern lined with trees and then in spring of 1971 city started construction of the lower lever through lanes that now exist. I can confirm that as of 2009 part of the old University of Maryland name is still on the main academic building (facing old blue room) The letters are all there except the "A" in Maryland. For those that do want to go to the Kasern from the Centrum, the underground ( the U1) has two stops. One at St. QuirinPlatz (right at the start of the Harlaching field/park on the north side of campus) and Mangfallplatz at the other end of the campus near the academic building.

The rest of the buildings such as the snack//deli next to Perry Hall and the old PX buildings are still there but in use for other purposes.

Final thought. We used to get Pizza delivery from Napolis Pizza (on way to Perlacher Forst) and I swear I have never had a pizza that comes close to 25% as good. Something about the greae and those great sweet green peppers. does this hit a nerve for anyone?

Skip all the side trips and just do a "21 bar hop" salute!

Was in Munich last summer for 4 days. McGraw is still there, cafeteria is gone, I believes much of it is German police occupied, faint sign of U.of M campus on the commissary building. I have photos but no time at this point to download; sorry. But Munich is still Munich and I've been thinking of purchasing a small apartment for my old age trips back to the Fatherland. You'll enjoy whatever you decide to do. Just go and wing it.

As a P.S..............Does anyone know where Cindy Hunter is these days (1969/70)?

I believe I'd heard that the Blue Room closed it's doors. Have lunch at Schneider back/under/behind the Altes Rathaus while you're doing Marienplatz instead - and enjoy a Schneiderweiss Doppel Dunkel Weiss for me! Sounds like a lot of fun, even if it is only for one day. Viel Spass!
